What’s a CEREC crown and why do I need one?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the tooth to restore its shape and strength and improve its appearance. With a CEREC crown, the restoration of your tooth is designed in-office using computer software. At JVR Dental, we do the prep, design, milling and cementation in one appointment.

We do the design and, once completed, your new crown is milled right before your eyes. You no longer have to go through the process of needing traditional impressions, temporary crowns and a second appointment!

What are the advantages of getting a CEREC crown?

A typical crown procedure involves taking impressions, wearing a temporary crown and returning for a second visit to have the crown placed.

With CEREC technology, there is no need to return for a second visit. The process is streamlined and the restoration is completed in just a few hours. What’s more, your crown is made of tooth-colored ceramic material, making it appear extremely natural looking. It’s also metal-free, so it’s safer and there are no silver fillings to discolor your smile!

What is the CEREC crown procedure like?

First, we’ll remove any decay from your tooth and do a composite build if needed to prepare your tooth for dental imaging. This digital picture of your tooth acts as an impression for your crown, rather than the traditional impression.

Once your dentist has an ideal image of your tooth, the computer and CEREC 3D software will convert the digital picture into a three-dimensional virtual model of your prepped tooth.
