What’s a composite filling and why do I need one?

Composite (resin) is a plastic-like material used to repair teeth damaged by tooth decay, cracked or broken teeth, or teeth that are worn from unusual use, such as nail biting and tooth grinding.

What’s the advantage of composite fillings over amalgam fillings?

Composite fillings are perfect for small to medium sized fillings and are best suited for teeth that experience a moderate amount of pressure when chewing, compared to the teeth that handle the bulk of your chewing.

They’re usually made of powdered glass and acrylic resin and, unlike amalgam fillings, don’t contain any traces of mercury. At JVR Dental, we also offer BPA-free composite fillings. They can also be shaded to match the colour of your existing teeth, making them less visible to other people. As more people have been looking for that natural look, composite fillings have grown increasingly popular.

How often will my composite filling have to be replaced?

Composite fillings will need to be replaced at some point due to the extensive wear and tear your teeth undergo each day. A damaged or cracked filling should be replaced as soon as possible; even the smallest, hairline cracks in your composite filling can allow bacteria and germs to seep into your tooth.

Once the bacteria and germs seep into your tooth, they are impossible to remove with brushing and flossing. If the damage to your filling isn’t fixed in a timely manner, the bacteria can damage the underlying tooth structure causing a cavity to form underneath the filling.
